Rules that matter on Qatar's roads
A summary of the rules visitors ask about most. Traffic law is enforced strictly, and fines issued during your rental are the renter's responsibility.
Drive on the right
Traffic in Qatar keeps to the right. Most Doha junctions are signal-controlled, with a few roundabouts still in use — give way as signed.
Seat belts
The driver and front passenger must wear a seat belt, and every other passenger should use one too.
No handheld phones
Using a handheld phone while driving is prohibited. Use a hands-free mount or pull over.
Children in the back
Children under 10 must not ride in the front seat while the car is moving.
Speed & red-light cameras
Fixed and mobile cameras operate across the country. Speed limits vary by road — follow the posted signs.
Fines on Metrash
Violations are recorded electronically and can be checked in the Metrash app or on the Ministry of Interior website.
Always carry your licence
Driving without a valid licence can mean one month to three years in prison, a fine of QAR 10,000–50,000, or both.
Accident or breakdown
Stay calm — we deal with this every day. Follow these steps and we'll take care of the rest.
